The relevance of ISO16890 for the HVAC and air filtration industries in USA
The new ISO16890 standard “Air Filters for General Ventilation” became effective on 01 Dec 2016. Criticism of the new standard, particularly in regard to its relevance in the North American HVAC market has quickly emerged via social media. This open letter is meant to address what we consider to be a misrepresentation of this valuable new global standard for the air filtration industry.

The International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) has this week published a landmark standard for the air filtration industry. ISO16890 defines testing procedures and a classification system for air filters used in general ventilation equipment
Air pollution in our changing world
Air pollution is not a new problem in the UK. The London smog of 1952 killed 12,000 people. Since then, changes in the way we live have also changed the air pollution that we breathe. Coal burning has fallen dramatically, but today increased road transport and the failure to control some exhausts from diesel vehicles has led to us being exposed to new air pollutants.

    One of the mast significant advantages is that the new procedure requires that filter efficiency be measured against the fine particle fraction PMl. This is important, because the medical and scientific communities are increasingly reporting that it is the PMl fraction that is mast hazardous to human health. Camfil strongly recommend the use of ePMl rated filters to reduce indoor air pollution and improve human health. According to the test protocol, filter efficiency must be measured both when the filter is unused and again when any electrostatic charge, which could artificially enhance performance has been removed from the filter. Both these results must exceed 50% efficiency for the filter to be rated as an ePMl device.
